Ambassador for Safety Awards

Vision, leadership and community support were attributes used to describe the 2012 Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes Ambassadors for Safety.

Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes Co-chairs Donna Villemaire and Lynda DaSilva were joined by Mayor Ric McGee and CAO Mark Fisher in presenting Ambassador for Safety Awards to Chief John Hagarty and Carol Timlin, Executive Director of VCCS Employment Services. Chief Hagarty and VCCS were nominated by the Safe Community Leadership Table in recognition of their commitment and support to the Safe Communities initiative.

“Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes is very fortunate to have dedicated and committed community partners working with us and supporting the safe community’s initiative,” states co-chair Donna Villemaire. Co-chair Lynda DaSilva echoes these comments and adds “The strength of this community initiative comes from safety champions such as Chief Hagarty and VCCS. Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes is pleased to recognize these Ambassadors for Safety.”

Police Chief John Hagarty was instrumental in establishing Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes and served as the founding co-chair. Through his vision and leadership, the local Safe Communities chapter has become a strong community initiative. Carol Timlin and the VCCS staff have become champions of the Safe Communities on-line training portal, purchasing training courses for clients and staff. Safe Communities KL receives a reimbursement from each course purchased which is in turn used to support community safety initiatives.

Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes received its designation in June 2009. It is one of 63 communities across Canada receiving designations from Safe Communities Canada.

A designated Safe Community is one which believes that a safe life is a basic right, and views its designation as a public affirmation of, and testament to, its aspiration to create a safer life for all its citizens.
